A Busy Year!

Whew! What a year it has been. The Children's Department is back in full swing after the holiday break. Story Times, Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market, and Toddler Time resumed the 9th of January. The new Story Time schedule seems to be working out very well. We discontinued our Wednesday afternoon Story Time due to low numbers. So far, attendance at the other three times has been great.
Madison Anchor Grant students and Laughlin Memorial Chapel students resumed their visits last week. It was great to see our afterschool kids. We are also very excited to be hosting both the Elementary and Middle School groups from the Anchor Program and the youth from Laughlin Chapel on Monday February 6 for our Black History Month program featuring Gregory Kenney.
I visited Ritchie Elementary this week to take our "Mother Goose on the Loose" program to the Northern Panhandle Head Start Pre-K class. I also got to take the same program to the Orchard Park Head Start birth-3 year old classes. We had a great time as usual! Northern Panhandle Head Start visited the library in December and January for a special Story Time and craft. It was fun to see the kids, parents, and teachers in the library. We also hosted a group of Boy Scouts in December for a tour. Several Girl Scout Troops will be visiting very soon.
We will be resuming our visits to Ritchie Elementary Kindergarten classes in the near future. I am also busy working on scheduling classroom visits and library tours for Read Across America Day in March and National Library Week in April as well as Summer Reading Program Informational Visits in April and May. The Summer Reading Theme this summer will be Dream Big-READ! There are lots of exciting programs being planned for this summer. As always we will keep you well informed of all the great programs here at the Ohio County Public Library as well as in our community.

Black History Programs at OCPL

Join us on Monday February 6 when Pittsburgh actor Gregory Kenney entertains us with his historical portrayals of famous African Americans. At 4:00, Mr. Kenney will be portraying Just'n Truth, a young man on the bus with Rosa Parks in "Please Keep Your Seat, Rosa Parks". At 6:00 he will be portraying a slave on the trip with Lewis & Clark in "York". Both programs are intended for families and will include a time for questions at the end. Story Time changes for 2012

If Ohio County Schools cancel or delay on Thursdays there will be no Kid's Fun Day at Centre Market for that day.

Holiday Story Times

Next week, December 12-14, will be the last week of Story Times for 2011. We will be reading Christmas stories and will have refreshments. Families are invited to bring a treat to share. On Monday December 19 we will have a family Story Time and will watch The Muppet Christmas Carol starting at 6:00 PM. Wear your pajamas and bring cookies to share. Hot cocoa will be provided. On Tuesday December 20 at 10:00 AM we will read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas and will have a visit from SANTA!
Story Times will return on Tuesday January 3. Story Times will change slightly in 2012. Starting Wednesday January 4 there will be NO WEDNESDAY 1:00 PM STORY TIME.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Party

Instead of a traditional Halloween Party, the Ohio County Public Library will be having a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Party on Saturday October 29 from 10-noon. Families may come to the library anytime from 10-noon to tour the lower level of the library which will be transformed into a chocolate factory. The tour will end in the auditorium where children will decorate a carry-out style box. All children will take home a treat. Registration is required for this event. Creepy Cuisine Cooking Class and Family Movie

On Monday October 3 the Ohio County Public Library will kick-off the Halloween season with a Creepy Cooking Class and Family Movie. This program will be held at 1:00 PM and at 6:00 PM. Children will make Nosferatu Nachos, Menacing Meatball Eyeballs, Halloweenies with Mustard Dip, and Mad Scientist Dip. After the cooking class, we will watch Disney's Spooky Buddies.

What happens "When Pigs Fly"? Come to the library on Friday July 8th at 1:00 PM to find out! Blue Rock Marionette will present the show-loosely based on the Three Little Pigs. Will they fall prey to Wolfgang Von Puke's plan to feature them on the menu at his famous pizzeria? Or will the chef make do with arugula and the opportunity to book the talented pigs into his Little Big Top? Hand puppets join a juggling marionette clown, tangoing cat, weight lifting bear, and of course a flying pig in this Blue Rock Marionette favorite.

Journey to Asia and WILD WORLD OF ANIMALS

The library will be closed on Sunday June 19th in observance of Father's Day and Monday June 20th in observance of West Virginia Day. We will have two special programs next week in addition to our regular Story Times, Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market and Toddler Time. On Thursday at 2:00 PM we will "Journey to Asia". Thursday June 16th at 2:00 PM we will "Journey to Africa" with our very special guest, Michelle Titus-Glover. Lyn's programs include participatory activities for the whole audience. One World, Many Stories-Summer Reading Program 2011

This summer we will pack our bags and head off for an around the world adventure! Story Times will focus on the lives of children throughout the world. We will learn what children eat for dinner, what clothes they wear, and even what happens when they lose a tooth. Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market will feature fairy tales and folk tales from countries around the globe. Programs will include story tellers, animal shows, a magician, puppets, and more. We will also have special programs every Thursday at 2:00. Each week we will visit a different continent and hear stories, make a craft, play games, have a snack, and learn about other countries.
Summer reading registration begins June 6 and continues to July 31. Children can register to read for eight hours throughout the summer. Each week, they can come to the library to show the Children's Department staff their progress. They will get a sticker to display on a suitcase in the Children's Department will receive a small prize. When they complete the goal of eight hours of reading, they will receive a ticket to our finale pool party at Wheeling Park. All of this and it's absolutely free! We hope that you will join us on this amazing journey this summer.

Next week is filled with fun activities for kids at the Ohio County Public Library.
Monday September 20 at 6:00 PM is our "Talk Like a Pirate Party". We will learn some songs, hear the story "Henry and the Crazed Chicken Pirates", make a craft, and decorate pirate flag cookies.
Thursday for Kid's Fun Day at Centre Market, we will be learning about dinosaurs. We will meet at Centre Market at 11:00 AM then walk across the street to SMART Centre Market for a tour and some dinosaur activities. We will then return to the market for crafts, games, and fun.
Friday September 24 at 12:00 Noon, the Oglebay Good Zoo will bring their "Zoo to You" program to the library. Join us to meet a few animals that call the zoo home.
We also have Story Time and Toddler Time this week. Our theme is Safari Fun.

A big thanks to everyone for their participation in our Make a Splash-Read! Summer Reading Program. We had 303 children register for the program. 163 children completed the program, giving us a 54% completion rate! Thanks to our readers for working so hard, parents for bringing the kids to the library to get books and attend programs, and our performers, who provided some great programs this summer.
If you completed the program, you may stop in anytime before the end of September to select a free book and pick up your reading certificate.

Today is the last day of the Summer Reading Program. Congratulations to everyone for ALL of their hard work. A big round of applause for the kids who read for 8 or more hours this summer. Also, thank you to all of the parents who faithfully drove their children to the library weekly to get books and to attend programs. We had over 50% of our registrants complete the 8 hour reading goal. I'm very proud of all of you!
Today, we will be showing "Diary of a Wimpy Kid-The Movie" at noon in the auditorium. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Tonight at 6:00 is the finale party at Wheeling Park. If you did not pick up your ticket PLEASE call me at the library at (304)232-0244 before 2PM.

On Tuesday July 12 at 2:00 PM we will be making Duct Tape Beach Bags. Reservations are required for this program. If you have made a reservation and will be unable to attend. please call and let us know. We had over 65 children signed up for Candy Sushi and had 21 in attendance.

Magician Dave Powers will be here on Friday July 16 at noon to put on his fabulous magic show. The program is open to all ages. No reservations are required.

We have tickets ready for the Finale Pool Party on Friday August 13 at 6:00 at the Wheeling Park Swimming Pool. As soon as the children have read for 8 hours (that's 32 stickers) we will give them their ticket. Children may continue to read after they receive their ticket and can still come in weekly to post their name on the Wall of Readers and to get a prize.

The Family Movie for Friday July 2 has been changed. We were originally going to show "Surf's Up". We are now going to show "Happy Feet". The movie will begin at 1:00 PM. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. You are welcome to bring your lunch.

The Ohio County Public Library will be closed on Sunday June 20 in observance of Father's Day and also Monday June 21 in observance of West Virginia Day.
Story Time next week will have an ocean theme and we will be making a seal craft.
On Wednesday, June 23 at 3:00 PM we will have our Shark Zone Program. Join us for stories, songs, crafts, and games featuring sharks.
Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market will be held Thursday June 24 at 10:00 and 11:00 AM. Our theme will be oceans.

Monday, June 14 at 6:00 PM, we will be having a Campfire Family Storytime at Schwertfeger Shelter at Wheeling Park (the shelter across from the playground). Richard Knoblich will be sharing his storytelling talents and Bob Willits will lead us in campfire songs. Afterwards, we will roast marshmallows. There will be no Story Time at the Library on Monday because of this very special program.
Story Times this week will focus on Turtles and their habitats. Story Times will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM, Wednesday at 10:00 AM and Wednesday at 1:00 PM.

Thursday is Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market at 11:00 AM. Our theme for the week will be Pool Safety. Join us for a pool safety lesson by a trained lifeguard and a swim training professional provided by the Wheeling Recreation Department. We will also have stories,games, and activities. Thursday at 2:00 we will be having a Design Squad Class for children 9-12 years old. The children will be designing and building a rubber band car. Registration is required for this event. On Friday at 10:30 AM, we will have Toddler Time. We use the Mother Goose on the Loose Program which stresses nursery rhymes, songs, fingerplays, puppets, musical instruments, stories, and interactive play. This week begins our summer sessions of Story Time and Toddler Time. Story Time is a 45 minute long program that includes stories, games, songs, crafts, and activities. Toddler Time is a 1/2 long program specially designed for children birth to two years old. We use the Mother Goose on the Loose program which emphasizes nursery rhymes, stories, songs, musical instruments, and more.

Story Time on Monday June 14 will be held at 6:00 PM at Wheeling Park Schwertfeger Shelter. Bob Willits will provide campfire songs and Richard Knoblich will be the storyteller for the program. We will conclude with marshmallow roasting.
There will be no Story Times on Monday June 21 in observance of West Virginia Day and Monday July 5 in observance of Independence Day.

Stop in to register for this year's Summer Reading Program. Our theme is "Make a Splash-READ!". Children are asked to set the goal of 8 hours of reading from the time they register until August 11. Every week, children can bring in their time log to receive a small prize and to hang a fish with their name on it on our Wall of Readers. Everyone who completes the reading goal will receive a ticket to attend our Finale Party on August 13 at Wheeling Park's Swimming Pool. Throughout the summer, there will be lots of fun programs as well as Story Time, Toddler Time, and Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market.

Come "Make a Splash" at the Ohio County Public Library with our Summer Reading Program. Children up to 12 years old can register to participate. Every child is encouraged to read (or be read to) for 8 hours this summer. Children who complete this goal will receive a ticket to attend our Summer Reading Finale Pool Party at Wheeling Park! Registration begins Tuesday June 1, but you can register all summer long. Each week, children can bring in their time log to be signed. Their name will be posted on our "Wall of Water" and they may select a small prize from our treasure chest. There will also be Story Times, Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market, and lots of programs here at the library all summer long. Some of our programs include the SMART Science Center on June 7, a Story Time at the Wheeling Park with storytelling, campfire songs, and TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS on June 14, Minute to Win It, craft programs, Magician Dave Powers on July 16 and The Bassmeister, Curt Strutz on August 6. Kid's Fun Day @ Centre Market will continue in May with a sports theme to honor National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Join us for sports related stories, crafts, and games. Kid's Fun Day will be held on Thursdays at 11:00 on May 6, 13, and 20. We will be off on Thursday May 27 in preparation for the summer programs.
On Thursday June 3, we will kick off our summer program "Splish, Splash, Read @ Centre Market".

May is Pet Month in the Children's Department! We will kick off the month with Juanita and friends from the Ohio County Animal Shelter on Monday May 3 at 6:00 PM. There will be a "pet themed" Family Movie on Monday May 17 at 6:00 PM.
Story Times will have a pet theme as well. Because of our 2 week break for Summer Reading-there will be no Story Times the weeks of May 24 and May 31. The Library will be closed on May 31 in honor of Memorial Day.

We will be collecting pet items to donate to the Ohio County Animal Shelter all month long. A drop-off box will be located in the Children's Department.
Children and families are also invited to bring in a picture of their pet to display in the Children's Department. Prizes will be awarded to the cutest, funniest, biggest, and smallest pet.

Launch Party Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is our Imagination Library Launch Party from 3:00-6:00PM in the lower level of the library. Children of Ohio County birth to 5 will be able to sign up for the Imagination Library Program. Everyone is invited to attend the party-regardless of age. There will be pizza from Vocelli's, a magician, face painting, carnival style games and prizes. 25 local organizations will be on hand to distribute information. At 4:30 PM there will be a puppet show called "ABC Sillies".
If you are unable to attend the party, you can register for Imagination Library in the Children's Department Office or the Circulation Desk starting Friday March 19.

Everyone is invited to attend the birthday party for Dr. Seuss in the library auditorium at 6:00.

Imagination Library is coming to Ohio County!

Ohio County has been selected to participate in Imagination Library. Imagination Library is for children from birth to 5 years old. The program provides a book to be delivered to the child's home each month at no charge. All children birth to 5 and living in Ohio County are eligible to participate. We will launch the program on Thursday March 18 from 3-6 PM with a carnival themed party. There will be food, games, prizes, magic, face painting for kids and lots of local agencies will be on hand to provide information for families. Everyone is invited.
